In Loving Memory of Stanley R. Castelli

(Eulogy given by his granddaughter Erin E. Reddert)

Let it be said … if there is justice in this world, then no man deserves less love than what he himself has been willing to give to others. We all know this intuitively, and every so often, as we journey thru life, we meet someone who is willing to trust without proof and to give without first receiving… to love without condition. Today, we gather together to honor such a man and to give back a small portion of that love which he has so freely given to us.

Some of us know this man as ‘Stan’, others ‘Uncle Stan’, and still others by the more formal ‘Mister Castelli’. Some of us may know him from his 44 years as a teacher in the Cincinnati Public School System, and still others know him as a neighbor. I myself didn’t meet him until he had embarked on his second career… ‘Grandfather’ … and I called him affectionately… ‘Grandpa’. I loved him and he loved me… and we both knew this to be true and good.

Nonetheless, it matters little what we called him, or how we met him. We are all here for one reason… he touched us in some way. We all have our memories of that ‘touch’. Mine are of love and tolerance … and encouragement.

Science tells us that, if we shine a flashlight into the darkness of space, it will shine on forever, eventually reflecting off of planets to continue on eternally. If love is light, and love is eternal, let us remember Grandpa by reflecting his light in our own acts of kindness … in simple words of encouragement, in acts of forgiveness, or in a simple and sincere smile. May Grandpa’s life shine on thru us.
